Sirius Arts Centre is delighted to present Tatooine: Sci-Fi Becoming Reality, an exhibition of work by New York-based artist George Bolster who grew up in Cobh. The works in the exhibition were developed during his multi-year residency at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI), and subsequent research with the Kepler Mission scientists from NASA Ames in Northern California. The exhibition, which coincides with the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing, comprises of installation, tapestry and drawing, that explore the recently discovered planet Kepler 16b, a planet which theoretically could support life, and which is circumbinary (orbiting two suns of differing scales), something previously thought to be physically impossible.
In the West Gallery, Life With Life Inside is a new installation by visual artist Siobhan McGibbon and writer Maeve O’Lynn, exploring the concept of post-human reproduction, a celebration of the divine feminine and a paean to the female body. A ritualistic and site-specific space, Life With Life Inside marks the departure from one world and entry into another, inspired by Cobh’s history as the departure for millions of emigrants bound for the new world, many through necessity rather than choice.
