The Allora Quartet Megan Chan, violin Michelle McCarthy, violin Stephen Kelleher, viola Grace Coughlan, cello Mendelssohn – String Quartet in A minor Op.13 Shostakovich – String Quartet No.3 Mendelssohn’s wrote his A minor quartet in 1827 when he was just eighteen years old. The quartet is full of the influence of Beethoven, who died that same year, but Mendelssohn also creates his own passionate and richly romantic language. Shostakovich’s third quartet was composed in 1946 as the world emerged from the horrors of the second world war and this is an epic tale of the onset of conflict, the cataclysm and its aftermath. The final bars are among the most devastating moments in music.
